Bowen Yang to Make Broadway Debut in ‘Oh, Mary!’

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, the producers of Oh, Mary! have announced that comedian and actor Bowen Yang will make his Broadway acting debut this September.

The former Saturday Night Live star and co-host of the Las Culturistas podcast will step into the role of Mary Todd Lincoln starting Tuesday, September 15. His limited 12-week run will continue through Sunday, December 7.

“My friendship with Cole over the years has led me down many roads, but stepping into their profound and singular masterpiece Oh, Mary! is easily my favorite,” Yang said of collaborating with show creator Cole Escola. “I am eternally grateful to them for giving me the dreamiest entry onto Broadway.”

Producers of the Tony-winning production also announced a new ticket release extending sales through July 10, 2027—nearly three years after its initial Broadway opening. Originally planned as a limited engagement, the show continues its run at the Lyceum Theatre. The production also enjoyed a successful, Olivier Award-winning run in London’s West End, with a North American national tour set to launch in September from Hartford.

Yang joins a cast that includes Philip James Brannon (as Mary’s Husband), Bart Foa (Mary’s Teacher), Bianca Leigh (Mary’s Chaperone), and Tony Macht (Mary’s Teacher’s Assistant).

As previously announced, Meg Stalter, who currently plays Mary Todd Lincoln, will give her final performance on September 12, with Hannah Solow stepping into the role on September 13. Yang joins a distinguished list of performers who have played the title role, including creator Cole Escola, Betty Gilpin, Tituss Burgess, Jinkx Monsoon, Jane Krakowski, John Cameron Mitchell, Maya Rudolph, and Meg Stalter.

Directed by 2025 Tony Award winner Sam Pinkleton, Oh, Mary! originally opened at Broadway’s Lyceum Theatre on July 11, 2024. It became the first play in the theater’s 121-year history to gross over $1 million in a single week. The production has since broken its own box office record 13 times and was the first show of the 2024–2025 Broadway season to recoup its initial investment.
